Our Terroir – NICARAGUA

Get to know a bit more about the land where the brand Cumpay is hand rolled.

ESTELÍ

Estelí is the third largest city in Nicaragua and is located in the Estelí department, roughly 150 km north of Managua. The city is the gateway to the northern regions of the country which makes it an active agricultural center and the main hub for a thriving tobacco and coffee industry. After the Cuban revolution in 1959, the town became home for Cuban cigar makers, who brought with them their vast knowledge of cigars and the seeds for starting their plantations. Today Estelí is one of the most important cigar-producing cities in the world.

Terroir is the set of all environmental factors that affect a crop's phenotype, including unique environment contexts, farming practices and a crop's specific growth habitat. Collectively, these contextual characteristics are said to have a character; terroir also refers to this character.

Some artisanal crops for which terroir is studied include wine, coffee, tobacco, chocolate, chili peppers, hops, agave (for making tequila and mezcal), tomatoes, heritage wheat, maple syrup, tea, and cannabis. Wikipedia
